Remembering The Past With An Old Friend

Published by pattye at 1:03 pm under Living Edit This

Yesterday, I emailed my best friend, Laura, and told her that I read in the paper that our second grade teacher’s husband had died.  Laura and I have known each other since we were in the second grade which was 36 years ago. Surprised  I can still remember the first time that I met her. She was standing next to the incinerator (at least that’s what they called it).  She had banana curls and glasses.  I was told by another teacher to introduce myself to her because she was new in school.  We have been friends since then.  We were maids of honor in each others weddings.  We live in different states, but we email each other several times a day.

We started talking about our second grade teacher and how she looked old to us back then and we wondered if it was because we were seven or if she was really old.  We figured by the age of her husband that she was probably in her early 40’s when we knew her.  I got out our class photo and our teacher still looks old to me.  I think it was her hairstyle maybe.

We also started trying to remember the names of all of grade school teachers.  We had a lot of laughs over that, but we were able to figure them all out.  It was definitely a mind exercise for us.

There is something to be said for having a friend for 36 years.  You know just about everything about their families and their lives.  We have history, that’s for sure.
